I think you just got tangled up between the sections of their site 
referring to the Zmanda commercial offerings and the Amanda open source 
community edition.

You can do backup to S3 with the open source community edition of 
Amanda: http://wiki.zmanda.com/index.php/How_To:Backup_to_Amazon_S3

I have not done this, but I have seen blogs by those who have. There are 
a couple of references here:
