Very difficult to assess this kind of thing because there are so many variables. According to the Census Bureau, in 2006 (the most recent year for which there is information), there were 22 million nonfarm sole proprietorships, of which about 16.2 million reported net income. But that excludes, for example, individual consultants who incorporate for business or liability purposes. I used to do statistical work for IBM, but a few years ago, they changed policy and told me I would have to incorporate in order for them to continue to pay me, at which point I bid them a fond adieu. New York City government has a similar rule, so there are a lot of 1-person professional corporations in NYC. You could try rummaging through information in the 2010 Statistical Abstract and make some guesses, but there is no clear answer. A good place to start is table 731 at: http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/cats/business_enterprise/sole_proprietorships_partnerships_corporations.html or: http://tinyurl.com/ycpooy4 Jan Werner _____________ Edbride-PR wrote: > ** Be sure to fill out the survey/skills inventory in the member's area. > ** If you did, we all thank you. > > > > > > Interesting quest. *Is* there, in fact, such a market?
