One point I have only seen hinted at is that there is a big difference between password protection and encryption. Winzip, Stuffit and the zip utility built into Windows (XP and up) all support password protection. Programs like PGP and one I have been looking at for HIPPA data SecureZip, support two factor encryption, meaning that both the sender and receiver need to have a key to open the file. For many purposes a password protected file may suffice. If you are dealing with a higher level of security requirements, such as credit card or HIPPA information (where you can get in a lot of legal trouble for not using good enough security), use a real secure solution. Just for grins, go to download.com (a reliably safe down-loadable software aggregator) and search for "zip password cracker". -Dan On Fri, Mar 12, 2010 at 8:48 AM, Kevin Phillips <kevin at kpitconsulting.com>wrote: > ** Be sure to fill out the survey/skills inventory in the member's area. > ** If you did, we all thank you. > > > > Truecrypt is a good open source drive and file encryption program but it > can be a little tricky when encrypting the drive your computer boots from or > backup drives that get swapped often....windows will occasionally change the > drive ID for no good reason what so ever and then Truecrypt cannot find it. > > Zixmail is OK for email encryption that integrates with Outlook or can run > stand alone.
