Hi everyone, Very interesting thread and it is clearly hitting an important nerve. It all started with a few bad intern stories. I'll just respond to the intern issue for now. Working with interns comes up in my social media consulting work a lot because companies often think they'll hire a young intern to "handle that social media stuff." And I've worked with college-age interns and volunteers in numerous scenarios, with many good and bad situations to report. I've gathered some good insights about how to screen, hire, and work with interns in a blog post, which remains one of my most popular posts. A few people added their thoughts in the comments section about how they have successfully worked with interns. In a nutshell, I wouldn't say it's a generation issue that makes the difference between good and bad scenarios. It seems to come down to having the right job description, a thoughtful collaborative structure, and thoughtful screening.
