This are some notes from the discussion last week about $400 notebooks, specific to using linux (the thread was about buying them) 1) Simpler login: https://help.ubuntu.com/6.10/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/ch12s01.html You can turn on auto login too From: kelly at left-click.us 2) Like all other modern Linux distributions, Ubuntu can be easily configured to auto login selected users. (On Ubuntu's default Gnome desktop, I think that's set up in System/Administration/Login Window.) I've set up several netbooks for non-technical users, who have all been very pleased with Ubuntu (netbook remix). I bought these from Amazon, who kindly r efunded $58 for the cost of pre-installed Windows each time. Roger Williams <roger at qux.com> 3) To bypass login for Ubuntu -- Login and go to System->administration->Login Screen. There you can tell it (once you unlock it with your password) to automatically log in a specific user each time. Then voila! no login page anymore. (obviously, this isn't that safe if you have stuff you want to keep protected, but it doesn't sound like you do.)
