Hi Stephanie - Sony and Canon both make HD camcorders that record to tape. I agree that it's the best way to go - tapes are easier to edit and they back up your footage. You can definitely get that camera itself for under $1,000, but like Adam said, your son could spend that much again on audio equipment and other accessories, depending on how tricked out he needs the camera to be. Camcorders.about.com is a really good resource for comparing camcorders and finding reviews.
