Re: "Whether Web 2.0 is qualitatively different from prior web technologies
has been challenged by World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee, who
called the term a "piece of jargon" --- precisely because he intended
the Web to embody these values in the first place."

I agree. What's changed is not so much the technology as the use of it by
consumers. There has been a revolution from the understanding of the web as
just another one-way communication tool for marketers to "target" an
audience. With the rise of SPAM, there has been a push back by consumers,
who no longer trust one-way marketing communication but rather
consumer-to-consumer communication.

Hence the incredible adoption rate of social media tools. It's not about the
tools. It's about consumers' need to find trusted products and services.
Businesses first need to use so called 2.0 tools to listen, address
consumer's concerns, and participate in the conversation. Listening ->
conversation -> trust -> selection.

Any specific 2.0 strategy needs to be thought through in terms of business
objectives and customer preferences. Progress in building trust can be
measured by a variety of non-traditional metrics depending on the chosen
strategy.

One great metric to start with is the "Net Promoter Score." More info at:
bit.ly/net_promoter_score.
