*Wireless talk set for Wednesday in Buckland* * By DIANE BRONCACCIO** Recorder Staff* SHELBURNE FALLS --- Buckland and Shelburne residents who want high-speed wireless Internet service may come to a presentation by the Great Auk Wireless Co. at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Buckland Town Hall. The meeting was set up by the Buckland and Shelburne Cable Advisory committees, which are in their fourth year of negotiations with Comcast to install cable in the more rural sections of both towns. While still negotiating with Comcast, the cable advisory boards have branched out to look for highspeed Internet alternatives for residents "who needed it yesterday," said Glenn Cardinal, chairman of Buckland's Cable Advisory Committee. "Comcast is not going to build out the entire towns of Buckland and Shelburne.". He pointed out there are many people in the Apple Valley section of Ashfield and in the Clesson Brook section of Buckland who may be very interested in wireless service. "I'm hoping to have 60 to 70 people, between the two towns, show up," Cardinal said. GAW recently signed up at least 250 residents in Conway and Ashfield and is hoping to be able to offer service in those communities by year's end. Wireless Internet Service Providers are primarily located in rural areas, where cable or telephone company digital subscriber lines are not available. A repeater acts as a connecting device between wireless routers and computers. If properly set up, it extends the range of a local wireless network. The system would be anchored to a fiber-optics backbone based at a technology center in Springfield, with repeaters placed in high elevations to direct high-speed capacity to the antennas of subscribers. GAW already has telecommunications equipment on Mount Tom. -- Rich Roth Webmaster/Steering Committee Member Hidden-tech http://www.hidden-tech.net The Talent you need is right here, Join and share your skills -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
