A lesson learned: It turns out it was the enclosure, not the drive. When I replaced the drive with another one, that one didn't work either. Then I put the original bad drive directly into one of the bays on my Mac Pro. Worked fine. You live, you learn. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.
