With your background Joomla is easily within your range. What capabilities do you need for this website? What are your long term goals for learning a CMS? If you just want to develop one site and it's a simple blogging site or an easily updateable brochure site, then Wordpress would make sense. If the site is more complex or you are planning on developing more CMS sites in the future, then Joomla or Drupal would make more sense. I'm a strong Joomla advocate myself. The bar to entry to creating a good looking, functional site is much lower than Drupal. You can be a developer of complex sites in Joomla without needing to know more than how to copy/paste a couple lines of php. And if you do know programming, the Joomla framework with its object oriented PHP and its use of objects rather than complex arrays is much more fun to program in. There's Joomla user group that meets every third Wednesday at 5:30pm in Brattleboro at the Marlboro College Graduate Center. We have an active google group joomlaug at googlegroups.com.
