Daniel,

First answer, check with your hosting provider, but your logic sounds 
fine since you don't need to worry about deleting any site content.

Second answer, it's pretty easy with a current version of WordPress to 
change the URL once it is installed (older versions, it's a bit of 
techie magic):

ref: http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL

Add these two lines to your wp-config.php, where "example.com" is the 
NEW location of your site.

define('WP_HOME','http://example.com'  <http://example.com%27>);
define('WP_SITEURL','http://example.com'  <http://example.com%27>);
