*Sometimes* you can get a carrier's voice signal and NOT their EVDO/3G
signal and *sometimes* you canNOT get a a carrier's voice signal and DO
get their EVDO/3G signal.  I know this sounds odd.  The voice signal is
on a different set of antennas/transceivers from the EVDO/3G signal. 
It has to do with which towers have which sort of antennas/transceivers
on them and which towers are 'visible' (radiologically speaking) from
your location.
