[Hidden-tech] Kids and freedom (was re: safe surfing tips)

I so totally relate! Dina and I both grew up on the tough streets of
NYC, taking public transit and in my case also riding my bike (no
helmets back then, either). I was going to 3rd grade at age 8 on the
public bus, *with a transfer.* Intercity buses even younger, terminal
to terminal. My parents would bring me to Port Authority Bus Station
and my uncle would meet me in Philadelphia, the last stop. Now the
bus companies don't even let little kids ride alone.

Given that there's no public transit where we live, we've raised our
kids to be as independent as possible, and we've trained them in
urban street sense. It shocks me that my son, who'll be 17 the week
after next, has friends who live in places like Newton or Wellesley
whose parents don't let them ride the T. I went to a city-wide school
and if I didn't take the subway, my only social life would have been
over the phone.

Frankly, we find giving our kids driving lessons a lot scarier than
the prospect of them doing public transit.

And yeah, we've been relying on ur kids for tech support for years!
They live on Facebook.
