I hope no one takes offense, because none is meant, and I would never presume to tell anyone how to care for their children; but I've often said what Maria is saying. It's almost inconceivable and incomprehensible (by today's standards) that any of us survived our childhoods. I grew up in New Jersey in the fifties and sixties and rode everywhere on my bicycle. We didn't wear any helmets, either. I started going into NYC by myself at the ripe old age of twelve. For example, I went to the 1964 World's Fair on my own. Very different to today's environment.
