There's sensible advice on how much to worry at the "free range kids" blog;
google search for:
  online predators site:freerangekids.wordpress.com

Our plan is to ban computers/tv from the kids' bedrooms, and monitor what
they're doing by simply glancing occasionally at the screen (we'll put the
computer in the kitchen or some other common area).

That's assuming that technology doesn't overwhelm us; by the time they're
off to college they might be getting iPhones as prizes in their Cheerios...
