I concur on the Zoom H2. Easy to use, incredible sound quality, and it offers 90 degree stereo, 120 degree stereo, and 2 and 4 channel surround recording. It records at numerous .wav and .mp3 resolutions. Make a recording, connect the recorder to your USB port, and transfer the recorded files to your computer for editing. Or pop out the SD card and transfer the files from it to your computer. Connect a high quality microphone if you like, but for most purposes, the built-in stereo mics produce exceptional recording quality with good separation. When interviewing subject matter experts or recording client meetings, place it on the conference table in surround mode. All voices will be captured clearly. Fits in a shirt pocket. I have owned mine for a year and it has performed perfectly. It's a bit larger than the units you can get at Staples, but the recording quality is near studio quality. It's a very versatile unit that offers omni an uni-directional recording as well as an external microphone. It comes with a 512MB SD card, but that can be replaced with a larger one later. I have a friend who uses one and she swears by it (she's a professional musician). Just another option. Will, He/She wouldn't be able to use the same lapel mic but there are many variations on the idea for the iphone. Here's a few...copied & pasted: There's a product called fourtrack <http://www.sonomawireworks.com/iphone/fourtrack/> The headset jack on the iPhone and iPod touch (2nd gen.) have three contacts inside. The normal two for stereo headphones and an additional contact for the mic input. Several companies have released "headphone-mic" adapters so that you can use your high quality headphones as a headset. These add-on microphones are a good way to record with FourTrack because you can position the microphone away from the sound source and have a longer lead for your headphones. here's another <http://dvice.com/archives/2009/07/external-mic-fo.php> device , different article <http://www.redferret.net/?p=16657> Companies like Brando offer low-cost microphones for the iPod Touch and iPhone, ... find a mic that suits your needs. I'm looking for recommendations for a digital recorder for someone who does a lot of extemporaneous presentations and wants a recording of each one for future reference. The person is currently using a Sony MZ-M200 Minidisc Recorder. Specs are as follows: * solid state - with removable memory like an SD card * external microphone jack for a lapel mike * can easily be slid into a pants pocket * will not turn on/off easily while in pants pocket * durable * good battery life * mono is fine, does not need to be stereo * time/date stamp would be helpful but not a requirement Any suggestions?
