He/She wouldn't be able to use the same lapel mic but there are many
variations on the idea for the iphone. Here's a few...copied & pasted:

The headset jack on the iPhone and iPod touch (2nd gen.) have three contacts
inside. The normal two for stereo headphones and an additional contact for
the mic input. Several companies have released "headphone-mic" adapters so
that you can use your high quality headphones as a headset. These add-on
microphones are a good way to record with FourTrack because you can position
the microphone away from the sound source and have a longer lead for your
headphones.

Companies like Brando offer low-cost microphones for the iPod Touch and
iPhone, ... find a mic that suits your needs. Don't pay much if you're just
looking to make voice memos, but some of the higher-cost mics can pick up
sound from across the room, if that's what you want to do.
