Will,
I use the Olympus WS500 which has long battery life (12 to 26 hours
depending on type of battery, recording quality) and recording capability
(39 to 544 hours), jack for a lapel mic. Rather than removable media, it has
the USB connection built in to download files onto a computer or disk, no
cables to deal with. This system works best for reviewing your own work and
for transcribing.
I've used the Sony mini disc and find it more complicated to operate and
time-consuming to download files. Also I end up with stacks of mini discs in
a box. The quality on the mini disc is better if you want to edit and sell
the recordings as a product. But not noticeably better than the Olympus if
you're just using them for reviewing and/or transcription.
Hope this helps. Cheers, Claudia

Subject: [Hidden-tech] Digital speech recorder recommendations wanted
I'm looking for recommendations for a digital recorder for someone who does
a lot of extemporaneous presentations and wants a recording of each one for
future reference. The person is currently using a Sony MZ-M200 Minidisc
Recorder.
Specs are as follows:
* solid state - with removable memory like an SD card
* external microphone jack for a lapel mike
* can easily be slid into a pants pocket
* will not turn on/off easily while in pants pocket
* durable
* good battery life
* mono is fine, does not need to be stereo
* time/date stamp would be helpful but not a requirement
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Will
