VLC is great,
I'm new to list, my name is Ryan Nestor and I work at Monadnock Media
in Sunderland. I've had to do a lot of transcoding for different
video server devices recently. VLC is an excellent option for
packaging mp2 and h.264 as .ts files for streaming off of disk or
network. For my money (free), an even better tool for transcoding/
compressing video is Ffmpeg. FF is also available for all platforms
and is open source. Both of these tools can also be controlled via
shell and bash scripting as well. I was personally very thrilled to
find two such tools, whose development was chiefly volunteer based,
outperform 1k+ suites from adobe and apple!
