[Hidden-tech] errors & ommisions insurance for web designers

I agree with what everyone has been saying. For one, we are partnered with
eCommerce providers. We no long do any of our own eCommerce programming.
It's just not worth it today. As a result, the security issues fall on the
company that programmed the software and the client. In order to be PCI
compliant anyway a site shouldn't be storing peoples credit card info
unsecured or unencrypted. When we are finished setting up a store for a
client, they assume all responsibility for the management of that store
after we hand it off.

And for the record, we do some pretty big eCommerce stores for clients and
have never run into a problem. Where's some wood?

Thank you all for your feedback!

What I gather from what most of you say, is that the cost of E&O makes it
unrealistic for my small sole-proprietorship and that in addition it's
probably unnecessary... but do you worry about being held responsible in the
event of an e-commerce site that you've developed being hacked and a
customer (or customer's customer) losing money? Maybe I just worry about
things too much!

Thanks,

Nancy

Nancy,

I agree with Jeremy. I have run a small design/communications business
(including all manner of graphic design, print, web and environmental
signage for close to 20 years). I carry a general liability policy for $1M
in coverage. E&O insurance is generally carried by print shops (where jobs
can run in the hundreds of thousands of dollars) and larger ad agencies
where errors in print can be costly.

Hope this info helps.

Nancy,

Try techinsurance.com

E&O insurance _is_ very expensive. I do not think it is necessary and do not
carry it myself. I do IT Project Management and database work where I often
have full access to the software, systems, and proprietary data of my
clients, usually under non-disclosure. When I have gotten quotes in the past
they have often run in the range of $5000/year, typically based on annual
revenue. Larger firms will pay more, smaller perhaps a bit less.

If you are working on-site at your client locations, a general liability
policy would be a good idea. This covers any harm you may do to computer
equipment or property that belongs to them. I pay $350/year for $1M
coverage.

Hi Everyone,

I am interested in hearing what other web designers are doing about errors
and omissions insurance - do you guys think it's a good idea? I belong to a
business group full of non-web designers who insist that I should have it -
and I do think it would make me more comfortable but as I've looked around I
see awfully high prices - higher that what some medical practitioners are
paying!

Any thoughts or recommendations in general? Any suggestions about where to
shop for liability / errors and omissions ins. for web designer-developers?
Are there associations with good group rates? I've looked around but not
found any...

Thanks so much!
