Hey guys --

I'm one of the founders of the Hypergrid Entrepreneur Group, and we just got
some virtual space donated to us for group activities -- close to 256 square
acres. (That's virtual land, not real land, folks.)

What we plan to do with this is put a little cafe in the center, as a
virtual hangout for entrepreneurs, and create some meeting areas -- small
conference facilities, that kind of thing. And we'll be offering free
virtual office space to folks interested in exploring the use of virtual
worlds for collaboration, conferences, training, and networking.

This is based on the OpenSim platform. This is an open source,
business-focused alternative to Second Life (but if you have scripts or
objects in Second Life, you can bring them over, and you can even use the
same browser if you want).

IBM has a similar product available, also based on OpenSim, and they charge
$50,000 for 64 square acres. (What you're paying for though is the
integrational with enterprise applications and corporate directories.)

OpenSim is a free, open-source virtual world server software. It is similar
to Apache, in that you can use it to put up virtual regions and host it for
anyone to visit. OpenSim is hyperlinked -- you can go from any OpenSim world
to any other one (unless they're behidn a firewall or password protected)
and can bring you virtual apperance and invetory with you (your avatar).

If you're interested in coming to the meeting, or in getting a tour of some
OpenSim sites, just let me know.

Best,

Maria
