Fern, I produce a podcast myself and would be happy to offer you suggestions. At the most basic you'll need a website with an RSS feed and a place to host your podcast. To answer your questions about hosting podcasts for free ... I've been using switchpod (www.switchpod.com) and they have a free hosting package (as well as other options). Podcasts can take up a lot of space on a server so using a dedicated podcast host will save you $$$ as the podcasts grow. For a basic website you could use wordpress to set up a website with the RSS feed (you'll probably also want to integrate Feedburner with the RSS feed for stats, flexibility, etc.). There is good information on the Wordpress site to get you going: http://codex.wordpress.org/Podcasting Be sure to submit your podcast to iTunes and other podcast directories as well to help promote it. This should get you going with the basics. If you are looking to do something less vanilla don't hesitate to contact me off list.
