Just a few words regarding FrameMaker that may prove helpful:
a.. FrameMaker supports placing graphics directly on a page or achoring them to text. For most purposes, anchored graphcis are the ones to use as they move as the text is edited. Anchored graphics can be placed in a variety of ways. See the FrameMaker Help for details.
b.. While FrameMaker has built-in graphics tools they are very light weight. Most users opt to import graphics created in Illustrator, Photoshop or whatever program they like. Frame supports a wide variety of formats.
c.. When people say FrameMaker supports authoring as well as publishing, they mean that you can create the document from scratch within FrameMaker. Most text is imported into InDesign from Word or from Adobe InCopy.
d.. FrameMaker supports multiple master page layouts. If you have a document in which nearly all pages can be laid out using a set of master pages, FrameMaker is likely to be a good choice for your project. If every page is unique or if FrameMaker cannot give you the layout you seek, InDesign would be a better choice. You will also want InDesign if you need fancy text effects.
e.. While some book publishers have switched to InDesign or other tools, FrameMaker is still widely used for technical publications. It has good table of contents, cross-reference, indexing, and structured authoring support. It excels as very long documents. With the FrameMaker Developer Kit, it is customizable.
f.. While Adobe has dropped support for non-Windows formats, the good news for FrameMaker users is that FrameMaker 9 has an updated user interface, more sophisticated book support, and enhanced support for PDF comments as well as DITA.
g.. While many have predicted the death knell for FrameMaker for many years, it hangs on because it is useful for many projects.
