Dear HT,

In my quest for cheaper, unlimited service, I have the below information to
share and invite feedback.

Well I learned some more about Boost Mobile and the new player in the area,
Prospect.com (seen the billboards?) By the way, Virgin Mobile is also owned
by Sprint.

Boost has 2 plans, one is on Sprint one is on Nextel. The $50/month
unlimited data, voice & text plan uses Nextel which uses iDEN not CDMA. The
mobile guy at the Hadley Target is pretty informed and he said iDEN is an
outdated standard which will be eliminated in a year or so and he guesses
subscribers will be upgraded to CDMA.

iDEN can do voice okay but not data, no where near 3G speeds, maybe not even
2G.

Prospect mobile is a start up out of Texas. They have a $35/month unlimited
voice plan that uses CDMA in Texas but AWS in Hartford/Springfield.
Wikipedia says okay things about AWS:

*Advanced Wireless Services*, also known as *AWS-1*, is a wireless
telecommunications
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecommunications>spectrum band used
for mobile voice and data services, video, and messaging.
AWS-1 is used in the United
States<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States>and replaces the
spectrum formerly allocated to Multipoint
Multichannel Distribution Service <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MMDS>,
sometimes referred to as Wireless Cable <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MMDS>.
The service is administered by the Federal Communications
Commission<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Communications_Commission>
.

The AWS band uses microwave <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microwave>
frequencies <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_spectrum> in two
segments: from 1710 to 1755 MHz, and from 2110 to 2155 MHz. The service is
intended to be used by mobile devices such as wireless phones for mobile
data, video, and messaging services.

Bidding for this new spectrum by the FCC started on August 9, 2006 and the
majority of the frequency blocks were sold to T-Mobile
USA<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile_USA>to deploy their 3G
wireless network in the United
States <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States>. This move effectively
kills the former MMDS and Wireless Cable service in the United States.

Best,
Andrew
