My current favorite theme is The Stars, which I use here:

I also like Mimbo, which I use here:

Stretching a banner across the entire top of a Wordpress site is easy,
just requires a couple of tweaks to a header's layout file -- as long
as you have a hosting service that allows you to do this.

If you're interested in either of these themes (neither of which is
available for free any longer, though there are professional versions
available for a price) let me know and I'll email them to you.
