[Hidden-tech] Wikis

I¹m looking for a free wiki site to build an online compendium of
information around contra dancing. The 800-pound gorilla is obviously
Wikia.org because they are an extension of the Wikipedia organization and
they use the familiar Wikipedia interface. However, I¹m concerned about how
large and prominent the banner ads are and the fact that there seems to be
no provision to pay to reduce or turn off the ads.

I¹ve found one other wiki site based in Poland called Wikidot.com which
appears to give you the option of having ads or not and if you have ads to
share in any revenue produced. Other than that I know nothing about them.

I¹d be interested in hearing about experiences people may have had with
developing wikis with various services like wikia and wikidot (I don¹t want
to host it myself).
