For whatever it's worth, I have had the opposite experience with Apple. I haven't had much of anything to complain about, but they have always stood by anything I have bought from them and always been available to answer questions or help out when I needed them. (The genius bar at the apple store is also awesome, but the regular sales people are very knowledgeable too...). And I know this is risky but I've never spent the money for Applecare because I've never needed it. But I do have a good IT consultant who bails me out once in a while so I guess it amounts to about the same thing. Last year I had a problem with an Iomega external hard drive that I bought from Apple and Apple made good on it even though, technically, the warranty should have been taken care of by Iomega. It's too bad that your daughter had such a bad experience--it's probably not very helpful to hear this but the bad apple stories are few and far between...
