Hi
use free dynamic dns (if needed) and remote desktop or vnc (port forward 
5900 or 3389, not respectively).
you may want more security and go with an ssl vpn (hardware is under 
$200 and easy to use), and is a 1 time investment.
if this is overkill or not clear to you, what may be even  easier is to 
look into enabling and using remote assistance in vista.
