Shel,

You have a good point. There was a recent viral marketing case study  
story in the Wall Street Journal. The company had seen pretty low  
results with the usual Tell-a-Friend or Refer-a-Friend email programs.  
So, they decided to offer users a cash incentive for every friend that  
they referred and that created an account. Their referrals skyrocketed.
