Great question. I think that making it a goal to post 2-3 times per week with the occasional "Special Post" is a great way to establish a rhythm. The key is to be consistent with your frequency, and to most importantly write as many good-quality posts as you can when you are in a prolific phase and store those in the post "bank". The exception of course will be time-sensitive posts for obvious reasons. I don't think bombardment is good from the reader standpoint though hitting the ground running can't hurt SEO any. Don't expect the search engines to penalize you unless you go from steady activity to stagnation over about a 60-day period, in my mind. I'm sure that's debatable, though. In the end, the key is to be consistent in whatever frequency is established. I say that also assuming that the subject matter is focused and stays within the relative confines of particular subject, which is another key to a successful blog.
