I agree about Small Dog...we use them frequently.

One thing that I realized that I did not add in my original thought to  
Lou...

I would argue that you want a laptop, rather than a desktop. While a  
Mac Mini and a cheap monitor will get you onto a Mac, it won't let you  
sit at Haymarket or Essalon and process your photos and emails while  
sipping great coffee out on the porch. The portability part of MacBook  
puts the whole gestalt of the ownership in a different space.
