1. Why do you think grocery stores have a frequenct buyer program? Perhaps
to collect data?

2. Other than my 16 lb seldge and chopping block, I have another simple
solution for data storage on a hard drive. Once there was a slogan "hard
drives were for programs, floppy drives for data." Today we could change
the last part to CD roms are for data, or perhaps portable hard drives.
Personally, I use Zip drives.

It occurs to me that there is clearly an environmental component to
data security. The bottom line is that all this personal data that is
collected and stored by various businesses creates not just the
problem of securing that data (which is often done poorly) but also
the problem of rendering the hardware 'too toxic' for simple reuse and
recycling. Perhaps one of the best things we can all do to mitigate
this problem is to begin refusing to provide personal data when it
isn't absolutely necessary. Some things to consider:

Do online merchants I use store my credit card number (I'm looking at
you iTunes)? What about brick and mortar outlets?

Do I use frequent buyer cards at the grocery store?

Do I fill out membership forms that require far more personal
information than is required to provide the service (web sites, etc)?

Just something to think about...
