Thanks, Deb Chandler Print/Web Graphics Assistant (part time) The graphics assistant reports to the UMass Extension Nutrition Education Program (NEP) Design and Marketing Director, and works closely with materials development staff on the design and production of NEP, Department of Nutrition and contracted program materials. The assistant helps to plan strategies to communicate educational information to targeted audiences and performs post-production tasks needed for web site posting. The graphics assistant plans, designs, creates layout, and coordinates print and web-based informational documents. He or she works with NEP and Nutrition Department staff on all matters affecting the look of print and web-based documents. The graphics assistant provides basic maintenance for the NEP and other contracted program websites. Duties and responsibilities 1. Responsible for designing and planning print publications in an educational environment for diverse audiences. Provides web site maintenance and post-production tasks. Provides input on a wide range of communication initiatives, to meet goals and objectives for NEP, Department of Nutrition and contracted programs. 2. Works closely with writers and editors to maximize effectiveness of publications. Chooses type fonts, paper stock, colors, selects or creates artwork for publications, and makes other decisions determining the effectiveness of the publication and/or web site. 3. Assists in coordination of pre-press production for print materials, creates print specifications; coordinates schedule with printer, inspects proofs for printer's and other errors, performs press checks as needed. Qualifications 1. Bachelor's degree in graphic design, communication/publishing, or information technology field and 3 years experience in graphic design for print and web or 2 years in computer-oriented publications, marketing, or advertising. Portfolio required. 2. Skills and knowledge in printing production, electronic publishing hardware and software, with Macintosh computer experience in design, page layout, drawing programs, photography and converting publications to web site. 3. Attention to detail including strong written, proofreading and oral communication skills. 4. Ability to think creatively, work on multiple projects under deadlines, and achieve results with a minimum of supervision. 5. Familiarity with multiple computing environments including Macintosh and Windows. Proficient using QuarkXpress (preferred) and/or InDesign, PhotoShop and Illustrator and experience with Dreamweaver, Acrobat Professional, MS Word and a willingness to learn skills typically used in design.
