Rich, When I saw that it was virtual I had some worries on the issues you expressed below. If I cannot setup what I need, that is one thing, on the other hand it is so cheap vs. buying ($2k per box vs. $70 per month of usage), that it at least seems like a good sandbox to play in. If nothing else I should be able to get "proof of concept" and a general range of needed hardware for a lot less up front money. Right now I'm all about reducing up front money. And I really don't see how EC2 can be used for realistic prototype/bench mark as described in #3. Two main reasons occur to me: 1) Ec2 is not a real machine - it is a virtual machine and I don't see how it can be compared with a similar setup of physical boxes, if fact, how can you even determine what is similar 2) Depending on the exact Mysql clustering method you use (there are a number of alterative methods - note I use lower case cluster, not any specific Mysql offering) - there are specific IP and hostname requirements for various load-balancing methods. Again EC2 does not have this kind of 'hardware' or system control between machine 'instances' In short to do a proper benchmark, there needs to be some measure of comparing apples to apples and ec2 to hardware boxes is like apples to ducks - not even the same type of creature - IMHO In my quick opinion anyway, Rich Michael Giles wrote: > Andy, > > #3 seems like a perfect use of Amazon's EC2 service > (http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html?node=201590011).
