LSOs ("Flash cookes") are a serious privacy issue on all operating systems. I use Linux and turn off LSOs with the Adobe Flash Cookie manager (mentioned in my blog post) and then chmod the directory to prevent anything from writing to it. On Ubuntu they are stored at: ~/.macromedia/Flash_Player/#SharedObjects If you don't prevent writing to that folder, Flash will still keep track of what sites you visited, though won't store the actual cookies. That means that even if you tell Flash not to store Flash cookies, Flash will keep a record of the sites you visit that you can only erase by visiting the Flash settings webpage. I don't think you can totally prevent it on Windows. The only way to really stop Flash cookies is for people to get the word out about it, and to make sure that the next generation of browsers get upgraded to clear Flash cookies when you clear your privacy settings. ========== Background reading: http://tips.webdesign10.com/flash-cookies-privacy Flash cookies manager: http://flashcookies.notlong.com [goes to Macromedia.com Flash cookie manager]
