>Dear H-T list,

>I am getting so much spam now that it's just taking too much time to sort
through and delete. I run Win XP Pro, and use MS >Outlook to funnel 3
e-mail accounts. I also use the free Avast ant-virus software.

>My domain host for 2 of the 3 accounts says that my e-mails are running
through their anti-spam tools, Spam Assassin, but too >much is coming
through.

>I'm open to buying anti-spam software.

>I look forward to the collective wisdom on this list to help me reduce this
nuisance.

Andrew, IMO there is no good desktop product available to prevent spam. The
only thing these things do is steer spam to another folder. You need to
intercept the spam at the mail server.

SpamAssassin is a decent open source freeware product, but it is by no means
state of the art, and it needs constant attention by your ISP's
administrators. It works well as a line of defense, but it's not
comprehensive enough to do a good enough job all by itself.

The way I deal with this for my customers is one of two approaches.either
enable a good antispam service for their domain, or move their email to an
ISP that has a better antispam infrastructure and has the resources to stay
on top of it all day. Both methods work well.

I have some customers who use Postini which is owned by Google. The standard
charge is $3/mailbox/month. The MX records are changed to point to the
Postini servers. Postini is configured for each mailbox, and to point to
your ISP's mail server (or your own).

Another route I've taken that has worked well is to move their email to
godaddy.com, which charges $29.99/100 mailboxes/year. Message size is
limited to 25MB, and you are also limited to 250 outbound emails/day to
limit bulk mailings. Server response time is good, and there is a webmail
interface. Their antispam is not quite as good as Postini, but it is a lot
cheaper.

Good luck,

Chris
