Jonathon, I've found apple's "mail" to be great if you only use at one location/computer but since I'm often in multple locations/computers I was trying to use .mac. The .mac virtual mail was really clumsy and slow and buggy...so, I switched to gmail and have been loving it, especially because of the ease of use with all the other free google products (calendar, docs, etc).
