jeff, that's the bummer about some of the new cameras... but you should be able to open the .avi with Quicktime (may need QT Pro, $29) and export or "share" as a quicktime file and then import into imovie. not the smoothest workflow but should do the trick for you. there are a host other file converters but i think this'd be your best bet.
