Excellent article. I agree that Vista is disappointing. Under the hood, it might be more stable and more easily supported, but from a user interface style, what used to be one or two clicks is now 4 or 5. Microsoft may well have jumped the shark on this one. As someone who bought his first IBM-PC on the day the Mac was announced and who has taken a ration of, well, crap, from Mac fanatics and someone who has consulted with the larger business world (PC-based) for 26 years, I am perhaps not the most Mac-friendly guy out there. (If Steve Jobs had allowed a second-source clone of the hardware and a connection to Novell networks, Microsoft would still be writing BASIC and we'd all have Macs, but then, he wouldn't be Steve Jobs if he had.) Still, a number of people I respect are moving to Macs so I've been looking at them. We are currently working on a project involving Vista and Office 2007. One consultant is running Vista/O 07 on Parallels, the rest of us are running the combo on PCs. We have a number of file corruption issues and inability to get files onto CDs from the Mac/Vista environment. The consultant is no computer or Windows novice-he knows what he is doing-but the problems persist. Yes, this is new stuff and emulation software always needs time to catch up. We had similar problems last year with a consultant who used Open Office on UNIX-saving as Word docs in Open Office is just not the same as creating the document in Word. The subtle differences there resulted in hours of re-formatting and editing. If I didn't need 100% compatibility or to work with a team of people who are using Windows/Office for more than mere data creation (text, spreadsheets, etc.), I'd look at the Mac. But, based on this experience, I can't trust my work to the Mac. I was at the recent Hidden Tech event to design programming for the next year. I know that many technology topics were discussed. Though, I don't remember anyone discussing an event re: switching to Apple from a PC. I recently made the switch to Apple after many, many years of using PCs. I certainly have enjoyed the switch, but I'm often looking online for Apple versions of common PC technologies. There may be other Hidden Tech members considering a switch to Apple or who have recently switched and would be interested in an event to discuss small business technologies available for Apple computers and other switching issues. Don't know anyone specific, but if you go over to Monster.com, all the jobs for the Apple store are listed there--and, of course, at the mall. Go to the Customer Service desk and there's a book that has flyers in it for all the jobs in the mall. Hi, everybody! I don't post often but I really value this list. My friend Wendy is interviewing for a position of Creative Teacher (graphics, sound, etc) at a new Apple Store that is evidently opening up at the Holyoke Mall. Does anybody know anyone associated with this startup? Thanks! ..David _______________________________________________ Hidden-discuss mailing list - home page: http://www.hidden-tech.net Hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net You are receiving this because you are on the Hidden-Tech Discussion list.
