[Hidden-tech] biznik

Hi Everyone..

Gianinna turned me on to biznik a couple of months back--I haven't finished my profile because I've also been pulling together a LinkedIn profile, as well as something on MyBlogLog (which recently went social--I had a profile there when it was just a stat counter)... as well as other social media applications...

There's lots of social/networking media out there--places to meet others online who are in similar businesses, with similar interests, or who are looking to hire. A lot more than what was out there only a year or so ago...

As far as biznik's tagline goes--welll, that's the way things are said in lots of West Coast/NYC techie-hip circles. I've been in some of them attending conferences in S.F. and SXSWInteractive in Austin, as well as with my involvement with BlogHer a woman's blogging conference and network (they've had two cons so far, and a business con coming up in a short period of time)

That's the way the blogging and social media circles talk. The attitude might *seem* like it's flip, but believe me, a lot of serious business is done in these circles.

I haven't liked the BNI stuff all that much--it works really great for some people and some kinds of businesses. But for what I do, and how I do it, I've been told I'm not traditional enough and "too edgy."

LinkedIn, while better, is even a bit stiff because it relies on a resume-style paradigm for listing "employment" and nowadays I'm working project to project, with some overlap of projects, but not with one single employer. So, I have to figure out how to tailor LinkedIn's networking style to project-related work without looking, at first glance, like a "job hopper."

As far as networking goes, lots of the social media stuff that's popping up now can be great for intros, but f2f has to, at some point, be the follow-up. There's just so much a person/employer/business can intuit about you online or thru your work. They have to get a sense of who you are.

My online work has lead to introductions to people who have then found their way to hiring me on various projects. It was through a friend at BlogHer (who is the founder of Dabble) that I got "invited" out to a social media conference at Harvard, where I met the president of Corante, who then hired me to edit their Media Hub. It was at the last BlogHer conference that I met an editor of the Huffington Post who then asked me to contribute there. And, through some contacts I made at another conferece in '05 has lead to me now being editor and social media manager for the iFocos/WeMedia conferece blog (I'll also be managing a small live-blogging staff and giving blogging updates during the We Media conference in February. The pay ain't necessarily great, but the perks and opportunities to meet people at the top of social media are amazing!)

So, online networking things are indeed great, and I think HT could have a better interface to make it easier to find things out about its members. But networking events and other meetup types of things--even just social stuff--are super-important.

It all, however, depends on what any particular group wants itself to be--and on some level, I think HT may be trying to get better focus and direction. Lots of things have changed since HT started, and it may take a bit of trying to get the right social and media equilibrium.

I'd like to tell you all about my experience with Biznik. I originally
signed up not long after they started and but have since left the network.

At the time there were far less members in MA than now ( I think I was
one of 12) and possibly the only person this side of Worcester.

First impressions were great, the website itself was a breeze, and I
enjoyed the idea of being able to promote my business to a ton of people
who then might be able to refer me.

I began to try to figure out how best to get my name out there and meet
other members. Well, that didn't work so well. While Biznik has a
great online presence, the main benefit to its members is still the
human interaction aspect of networking, which calls for events, which
never seem to be anywhere around here. If you look, their site even
talks about how they are an "event driven" organization, and further
analysis shows that the bulk of those events take place in Washington
and other places far from driving distance of Western Mass.

So after about 8 months without a single referral, and without having
truly met anyone else in the network, and I tried. I left the network
and had them take down my name.

Let me say this. those of you discovering Biznik - give it a try, just
remember the importance of human interaction not just to Biznik, but to
networking in general. Who knows, maybe if enough of you get together
you can start throwing Biznik events.

As for HT, I agree that although the website could use some updating, we
need some definition as to what the group is and will be.

P.S. - Since then I've joined a local BNI chapter and LinkedIn, both
have been great and helped me expand my business.
