Yes, this is one way, and there are some widgets that will do this.

HOWEVER: many people who surf blogs looking for information also use RSS readers--such as Newsgator, Bloglines, etc. (Google, I believe, has one, as well as Yahoo.)

Your blog needs to have a "feed" to be picked up by the reader. It's pretty easy to "burn" a feed using Feedburner--if your blogging platform doesn't give you a feed off the bat.

A blog with its own unique url will allow you more access into the search engines--depending on the amount of content you post and a few other things that help to make the blog search-engine friendly. You can cross-link your blog to your website, thus allowing whomever reads your blog to get to your website as well as those who find your website to go in and read the most up-to-date info about your business on your blog.

For some kinds of businesses, newsletters work well for keeping their communities/customers informed*(your customers *are* your community) For others, blogs work. Much of the decision-making depends on the time/money you have to put into either effort. Blogs and newsletter--along with podcasts, wikis, webinars, etc-- are forms of social media and a desire to interact with others (not just throw more static content out on the 'net) is what makes them effective parts of a marketing strategy.

The blog software sends an E-Mail telling the subscriber that there is a
new post and includes the URL of the new page. That is, the blog
software maintains a mailing list just like the newsletter system. The
difference is that the newsletter system sends the whole newsletter to
the subscriber and the blog posts the news on a web site and sends a
short message with the URL to the subscribers. The latter has the
advantage that non-subscribers can access the blog and Goggle, et. al.,
will spider the blog and add it to their search engines -- this gives
you a wider audience and greater access to new subscribers. The
down side is that subscribers have to actually go out on the web to read
the news instead of it being delivered to the E-Mail inbox.
