As others have pointed out in this thread, RoR is not a programming language but a framework based on Ruby. Ruby is a powerful and elegant object-oriented language, but outside of Japan, it's popularity until recently was not high. But it is picking up lots of fans. Another framework for developing database-backed dynamic websites is the python-language based django framework (http://www.djangoproject.com/) which I would highly recommend. Python is an equally elegant and powerful OO language, and has been around a bit longer than Ruby. There are whole language wars being waged daily in various open-source mailing lists on whether Python or Ruby is the better language, so I have no desire to start one here among aficianados of either language. I use django heavily, and I love it for the ease with which you can build data-driven applications. The website part is only a small but important part of its application. One thing that Django has but RoR does not have natively is a nice administration and user authentication framework. Having said that there are a lot of common features between RoR and django. Which framework is right for you is entirely based on which language you have more familiarity with. If you don't know either language, and don't want to go with PHP based solutions, you really have to make a choice. Python does have a much larger user-base, so if you are hiring someone or contracting out your work, you'll have an easier time finding the right people. Gopal.
