If you get a machine from a large OEM  (ie. Dell, Gateway, etc.) you
don't get Windows 'install disks', just a 'recovery' disk.  If you get a
machine from a local (small) systems builder (i.e. College Pro, etc.),
you probably get a retail install disk -- that is people like College
Pro just buy a retail box (like the ones you see at Staples or Best
Buy).   Since small local systems builders don't  'build' laptops, the
laptop in question would be from  an OEM.  OTOH, if the  laptop
originall had, say, Win2K and was field upgraded  to WinXP it is
possible the OP would would have WinXP install disks or else WinXP
upgrade disks.

Virtually *anyone* who has used *anything* other than MS-Windows for a
non-trivial time ends up 'seeing the light' (whether it is colorful
apples, friendly pengins, or friendly devils).
