Brendan, These all sound like minor configuration problems. OS X is, in general, much easier to connect to the internet than OS 9. Assuming you are on DSL or Cable, go the System Preferences -> Network, and make sure that ³Built-in Ethernet² is the first selection (if you are using dialup, then you¹ll need ³Internal Modem² instead). To change the order, click on ³Show:² and choose Network Port Configurations. Uncheck any you don¹t need and drag the primary one to the top. Again, assuming you are on DSL or cable broadband, change show to Built-in Ethernet and then make sure it¹s set to DHCP. If you are on dialup, select the modem and make sure it is configured properly. Regarding the password issue. When you initially set up your Mac you were prompted to enter a user name and password. That created an initial administrative account and for various system functions that access the system at a low level such as installing software, etc. you will be prompted to enter that password. Many people forget that they ever entered that password until months later when they try to install some new software and are prompted for it. If you can¹t remember or guess at what password you used, you can reset the Master password by booting off the startup disk that came with your computer and using the Password Reset Utility. For details see this Apple article on resetting passwords. Scroll to the bottom for the procedure I mentioned. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106156 In terms of getting rid of OS 9, OS X can run OS 9 applications in what is called ³Classic² model, meaning that OS 9 boots up with OS X when needed, for instance if you have a OS 9 application that you have no equivalent OS X version of. Assuming you have the OS X version of the applications you need (Word, etc), just run in OS X and open those documents in the OS X version. If double-clicking causes them to be opened in OS 9, try doing a ³Get Info² (Command-I), using ³Open With² to select the OS X application you want it to open with. If you click ³Change All², it will change all documents of that type to open with the new application. Regarding the ³Ghost in the Machine² - I¹m not sure what is going on, but I¹m sure there is a simple explanation.
