Hi Amy, Yikes! Gas explosions are scary. Any decent plumber should know what to watch out for with standard home gas plumbing and appliances. A few notes that you might (or might not!) find helpful: Obviously you should make sure you have a gas detector in any space with gas appliances or plumbing. Since natural gas is lighter than air the detector should be high up in the space (if using propane the reverse is true). If you really want to be cautious you could inquire about a natural gas detector that could be hooked up to a monitored home alarm system so that someone would know about a leak even if nobody is home. Any gas appliance that turns on automatically, such as a water heater or furnace, should, as far as I know, have a "fail-safe" system that prevents gas from getting to the main burner if the pilot light goes out. Of course such a "fail-safe" can fail, which is where the gas detector comes into play. - Bruce -----Original Message----- From: hidden-discuss-bounces at lists.hidden-tech.net [mailto:hidden-discuss-bounces at lists.hidden-tech.net] On Behalf Of A - Z International Sent: Thursday, September 07, 2006 12:18 PM To: hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net Subject: [Hidden-tech] seeking natural gas expert ** Be a Good Dobee and help the group, you must be counted to post . ** Fill out the survey/skills inventory in the member's area. Hi all, Having survived the explosion/fire up the street in mid-August (luckily not my condo complex, but too close for comfort), I'm trying to get as much information as possible about how to protect my unit. I have natural gas. The explosion involved propane and human error. Does anyone know a good gas expert/consultant? best, Amy Zuckerman Hidden-Tech Founder, Clerk _______________________________________________ Hidden-discuss mailing list - home page: http://www.hidden-tech.net Hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net You are receiving this because you are on the Hidden-Tech Discussion list.
