I like Jagflyhosting and Gaiahost as they're local, and are actually cheaper than many big providers (like go daddy) - providing excellent support and have had no uptime complaints. Like Ellen, I have also seen some local providers have notable amounts of downtime over the last year with various services, but neither of these two. I believe both offer windows or Linux hosting and varying levels of self control on the back end. There really are a lot of local cost effective hosting options on par with the big ones, which I largely discovered through this list myself, so you're in the right place.
