[Hidden-tech] MAC-PC calendaring: lack of synchronicity

Apple will be rolling out a new calendar server, iCal Server, that is
built around CalDav (www.caldav.org) that hopes to address many of
the interoperability issues with current calendaring systems. The
CalDAV standard is being developed through CalConnect
(www.calconnect.org) a consortium that has been working to make
calendars and scheduling more "friendly".

There is currently an open version of the forthcoming iCal Server
called Darwin Calendar Server. It is available at http://
trac.macosforge.org/projects/calendarserver.

The CalDAV protocol looks promising as it builds upon other open and
widely used standards (http, WebDAV) but the real test will be how
many vendors will adopt the standard and implement it in their
products. Microsoft is clearly the 800 lb. gorilla in the calendaring
and scheduling space with Exchange so it will be key to watch what
they do.

Currently there is little support for CalDAV in applications that you
can put on your computer today. But that may change fairly quickly if
it takes hold.

You can read more about Apples plans at http://www.apple.com/server/
macosx/leopard/icalserver.html.

This doesn't really help you today, but it might be something to
consider as a future alternative.

Something to keep in mind for the future is that the next version of
Mac OS X, 10.5 aka “Leopard”, will include a multi-user capable
version of iCal. This takes iCal beyond just syncing to actually
being able to see, share and presumably edit events between users. I
don’t know how it’ being implemented – perhaps someone who has the
Leopard Developer Release can chime in – but it should go a long way
to addressing the issue of multiple people accessing the same
calendar. I’ve been using Now Contact & Now Up-To-Date for over 12
years, but I think this will be me to finally switch to iCal.
