Actually, Yellow brand biodiesel is only about $3.65/gal. Not only can you run a car on waste vegetable oil (WVO), you can convert WVO to biodiesel, which requires no engine modifications. Although some commercial biodiesel manufacturers (including Co-Op Power) make biodiesel from WVO, most make it from virgin rapeseed/canola or soybean oil due to flaky WVO supplies and quality. -Cody -----Original Message----- From: mcm at mcmvoices.com [mailto:mcm at mcmvoices.com] Sent: Friday, May 12, 2006 10:36 AM To: 'W. Used vegetable oil is free. Disadvantages - you need to convert your engine, so as to be able to preheat the oil, compared with biodiesel where all you have to do to your diesel engine is replace fuel lines and gaskets. The conversion kit is $800 - $1200, and if you have it installed that's another $600 - $800. The other disadvantage is you have to compete with the biodiesel companies to stake out your source of used oil. I love the idea of running on vegetable oil and plan to do it if I can ever find a used diesel car I can afford. Even better would be a car that would run on garbage. Probably wouldn't smell too good though. MCM Mary C. Compared to regular diesel, B100 (100% biodiesel) generates FAR less pollution: unburned hydrocarbons (-67%) Particulate matter (-47%) CO (-48%) Sulfur - the primary cause of acid rain (-100%) Polycyclic Aromatics - the primary carcinogen found in petrochemical emissions (-80-90%) NOx emissions are 5-10% higher. B100 is also extremely stable - it has a flash point some 150 degrees F higher than regular diesel - safe enough for me to carry around a jug of it in the back of my Beetle. It also smells like cooking oil, which is downright pleasant compared to the rotten-eggs-and-ester smell of dino-diesel. (SOURCE: National Biodiesel Council, www.biodiesel.org) I'm ignorant of any comparisons to gasoline, but my feeling is that, like ethanol, it's got to better: clean and renewable. The premium price of biodiesel will be less of a barrier as gas prices continue to increase. I'm already happy to pay extra. Does biodisel make less polution then disel, or gas? What is the price per gallon also? In addition, in the Pioneer Valley area, a new biodiesel plant (that will use waste veggie oil as the feedstock) is in the works [breaking ground this spring/summer] in the Greenfield Industrial Park. http://www.northeastbiodiesel.com They will only be selling wholesale, but a cooperative group, CoopPower (http://www.cooppower.coop) is a major investor and hope to maintain local control of this sustainable energy resource. Locally, you can get biodiesel blends at the pump in Greenfield and Brattleboro (at the Flemoil Stations) and also in Holyoke (at Alliance Energy). Yellow BioDiesel is available in 5 gallon jugs in many stores and service stations in the region as well. http://www.yellowbiodiesel.com/ I have been successfully running my 1978 Mercedes Benz 300 sedan on biodiesel for the last 6 months. Runs great and I get the same (poor) 27mpg as on petro-diesel. Ebay, Greasecar classifieds, and Craigslist are all good options for finding a diesel (in Mass). In other states (and when the low-sulphur diesel requirements go into effect in Sept), you can buy a new diesel car or truck. Already 22% of VW sales are in the diesel segment: http://www.greencarcongress.com/2006/05/us_sales_of_vw_.html hope this helps -Garth _______________________________________________ Hidden-discuss mailing list - home page: http://www.hidden-tech.net Hidden-discuss at lists.hidden-tech.net You are receiving this because you are on the Hidden-Tech Discussion list.
