Town of Amherst takes old monitors, etc. for recycling at $30 each, I
believe.

I am told that College Pro Computers in Hadley takes old PC equipment for
.50/pound or something like that.

I believe all towns are required to accept old electronics and nearly all
charge a fee ($3-10) to do so. It is my understanding that nearly all local
towns contract with the Umass Recycling facility, which started as a Umass
project and then expanded. They strip down the electronics to their
component parts for recycling.

Nearly all electronics (including TVs, etc.) contain compounds and metals
which must be disposed of properly, including heavy metals such as lead,
cadmium, gold, etc. In Europe, the purchase price of a television includes
the cost of disposal. You simply return it to the store you purchased it
from or a recycling facility and it's taken care of. Hopefully the US will
someday have such "cradle-to-grave" laws in place, but for now, the
responsible thing to do with all electronics is to pay the fee and get it
disposed of properly.

If your town doesn't take it, they should have a policy in place for how
such items are handled. A neighboring town may be able to accept items that
your town doesn't. I don't think you can take things directly to Umass
anymore, but you can call the Amherst DPW about getting the appropriate tags
to dispose of the items.
