1. Laptop. Most laptops have a universal, switching, power supply. As someone said, look at it. You will often see somethhng like 100 ~ 240V, which means 100 volts to 240 volts. Japan is 100 volts, the UK is 240. It will also have something like 50 ~ 60 Hz, which is 50 and 60 Hertz. Most, but not all, of the Americas and Japan is 60 Hz, the ROW is 50 Hz. 2. Internet Cafes are great! The WiFi standard is world-wide, but implementation is not. 3.Cell phone The world is divided into three radio regions, I, II, and III. We are in Region II. Our frequency bands are different from Region I, Europe. Our normal cell phones cannot work there. However there are "multiband" phones that do. If you want one of these, make sure it is works on "GSM." That is the common standard where you are going. The cost of using a US, multiband (AKA Triband) phone in Europe is not cheap. Last time I looked, it was about $2.00/min. Renting a European cell phone at Logan is the same price. A fellow who I have been working with says that he has a US Triband phone, and pays a bit less...about $1.00 or 1.50/min. I think he uses verizon. It works just fine into Italy. Another suggestion is to buy a "trak-phone" there. Unfortunately, the service you get will be country specific. We have a T-Mobile phone from Austria, which does not work outside of the country without authorizing it and paying more $$ Calls within a country in Europe are much less expensive than here, and cards for these phones are available everywhere.
